HOW TO EDIT YOUR OWN WRITING?

Editing is an important part of the writing process.

Whether you are a novelist, a non-fiction writer, a blogger, or a content writer, editing/self-editing can transform an average piece of writing into a great one.

Rarely is the first draft of your writing your best. Therefore, it is essential to revise the draft & then edit it multiple times before you hand it over to a professional editor or submit it for publishing.

The secret to good writing is good editing. Here are some tips:

1. When you write something, you get very close to it. You need to step away & come back later with fresh eyes.

2. Read your work out loud. You’ll catch more problems & get a better feel of how your words flow.

3. If a word isn’t necessary in a sentence, cut it; if a sentence isn’t necessary in a paragraph, cut it; and if a paragraph isn’t necessary, cut it, too.

4. Write in active voice. The subject of a sentence is performing an action. That action is represented by a verb, which is the part of speech that anchors all complete sentences.

5. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print. Avoid Clichés.

6. Get familiar with style guides, like the AP style guide, and Chicago Manual of Style.
