How important is building vocabulary for authors?

Do words frighten you?

Research indicates that low levels of vocabulary can have an impact on reading and therefore writing.

Vocabulary can be said to be the "glue" or tools a writer uses that holds stories, ideas and concepts together.

“As vocabulary is reduced , so are the number of feelings you can express, the number of events you can describe, the number of the things you can identify!

Not only understanding is limited, but also experience. Man grows by language. Whenever he limits language he retrogresses!”

― Sheri S. Tepper

It allows us to express our ideas and communicate effectively.

We can say what we mean easily.

We can evoke emotions.

Your words need to speak to the reader and that can only happen if you know words and make them your tools.

Ways that having a strong vocabulary helps when writing include:

🎗being able to choose more descriptive words to help your reader envision what you are describing.

🎗being able to adapt your writing for your audience (e.g., simpler words for children and more complex words for college students).

🎗creating more variety in paragraphs and sentences with vocabulary words which keep your reader interested in what you have to say.

The greater the vocabulary, the more concise the writing which is essential to develop good writing skills.

It’s about finding the right word — the one special word in a sentence — that will transmit an image or feeling directly into the reader’s mind. -- Diane Callahan
